yoga

Yoga is a system of exercises for mental and physical health. There are countless benefits in addition to the physical toning of the body and increased flexibility.

The approaches to yoga and styles as well as the number of teachers these days are as diverse as the practitioners themselves. There is no one size fits all practice and we are all unique.

Teaching Classes

My Style

I characterize my style as experiential biomechanics. My teaching is grounded in the science of the body. I focus on anatomy and help reveal the stories of the body through simple somatic analogies. As a guide, I promote change through spatial awareness and acuity of movement. A change in proprioception can change the sense of oneself in much a larger capacity than exercise can do alone. I approach my own practice this way and spend hours considering the nuances of asanas and body structure. I love to create sequences that ultimately lead to greater strength and the pleasant surprise that what was unattainable is suddenly possible! While I believe creativity has no bounds, safety is most important. Make no mistake though….I will make you sweat.

Yoga Background

I studied yoga for 13 years in NYC, a year in SF and two in Portland before arriving to DC. I have been blessed and honored to learn from amazing teachers. Iyengar yoga is my root style and taught me the fundamentals of alignment. Hatha yoga that followed non traditional formats inspired me to be inquisitive and informed my practice for many years as well. As my practice deepened, I took that knowledge and applied it to a more flowing style and eventually to Power Vinyasa and eventually Rocket. I have also spent a year doing aerial yoga intensively, as well as practiced Bikram at times with vigor. I see the value in all forms and love applying all that I’ve learned to my teaching. After years of endless classes and workshops, these days my own practice is what informs my teaching the most.

The Path to Teaching Groups

I have dedicated my life to understanding the body through somatic experiential learning and studying the science of movement.   My journey began in philosophy and writing about the body-mind connection. Fascinated by the philosophy of the body, I became a Rolfer, before returning to Graduate school for my Masters in Joint Biomechanics.  My continued studies led me to emphasize movement interventions in my sessions with clients. Teaching classes in addition to privates was an obvious progression, allowing me to reach out to a larger population. I love to cultivate the group energy, reaching higher states of physicality and meditation through movement. Most important, I want to create an environment for community to thrive.
